NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral’s Megan Haala pitched a gem of a game on Friday in the Greyhounds 10-0 six-inning victory over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.
Haala pitched a six-inning no-hitter and allowed one walk and no runs. She struck out six batters. She had 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Allison Dornseif of BLHS was the lone player to reach base. Haala issued a leadoff walk to Dornseif in the top of the third inning.
“Megan was hitting her spots and we had good defense behind her,” Cathedral head coach Jaime Kuehn said. “That [defense] took the pressure off Megan.”
One example of the Greyhounds’ solid defense came in the top of the fourth inning. Lily Hubin hit the ball in the air between left and center field. Center fielder Jenna Hotovec made a diving catch for the final out. The infield also did a top notch job of either making catches or fielding the ball and making good throws for outs.
Lily Brennan reached on an error in the bottom of the first inning. She moved to second on a sacrifice by Alex Hornick and scored on Hotovec’s double to left field. Kiah Helget belted a double to center field which scored Hotovec for the Greyhounds’ second run.
Sydnee Helget belted a leadoff double to the left-field fence in the bottom of the second inning. Helget advanced to third base on Lily Franta’s sacrifice. Helget scored on Emily Guggisberg’s flyout to left field. Brennan then hit a double to left field and scored on Hornick’s double to make it 4-0 Cathedral.
Hotovec belted a leadoff home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning. She hit that homer on the first pitch from BLHS pitcher Alex Maiers.
Emily Schommer the walked and stole second. Courtesy runner Jaylin Hartness entered the game for Schommer. Hartness scored on a BLHS error for a 6-0 Greyhound advantage. Another BLHS error gave Cathedral another run. Franta reached on a fielder’s choice. She scored on Brennan’s left-field single for the Greyhounds’ eighth run.
Schommer singled to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hartness entered again for Schommer. Hartness scored on another BLHS error. The Greyhounds scored their final run on a hit for the last run of the game.
Brennan went 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Greyhounds. Hotovec was 2 for 4 with the home run and two RBIs. Guggisberg went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Maiers was the losing pitcher for BLHS. She pitched six innings and gave up 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks. She struck out two batters.
Cathedral will travel to Springfield on Monday.
